In a red carpet starlit welcome last night at the progressive Freedom Park, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa gave the 17th World Festival of Youth & Student and the socialist cause it represents a comrades blessing by reinforcing the need for the working class to assume their rightful place in the front ranks of the struggle, an urged left organizations to find economic ways of managing capitalism. He went on to reiterate that this would only be half the battle; beyond that it is of imperial importance that we collectively find sustainable measures to break capitalist tendencies.
The Executive Mayor’s State Banquet was officially and gracefully opened by the confident and unexpectedly charismatic the Rapulane Girls, Two sisters with an unrivalled passion for their country and a vast knowledge of the South African struggle and heritage. Amongst their performances for the nigh the girls performed the unforgettable poem “Revolution Relay” which is a poem that denotes the passing of the baton between the Leaders of the ANC who led us to the freedom we now enjoy. Written and performed by the sisters, the poems and songs give you a feeling of nostalgia; not just because of the girl’s fanatical performances, but because of the maturity in their content. Witnessing their brave performance gave the audience hope for future generations, who were inevitably left the comrades gobsmacked.
Members of Communist Parties from all over the world, who are currently in South Africa for a International Meeting of Communists and Worker’s Party were also represented at the banquet and avidly took their hats off to the Youth by also giving their blessing to the festival and to the united cause that they both are soldiers of. All in all the night was a raging success capturing the hearts of all our global guests and confirming South Africa's role as the Host City as the right decision.
